Map and spots
Use the map
The Map tab shows your saved spots, your catches and your own position on Apple's map. The buttons | Button | Where | What it does | |---|---|---| | Magnifying glass | top left | search for a place or one of your spots | | Layers | top right | opens Map type | | Arrow | bottom right | centres the map on your position | | + | bottom right | Add spot or Add catch | Gestures - Drag to move the map, pinch or double-tap to zoom. - Tap a pin to open that spot or catch. - Touch and hold any point to drop a pin there: Drop a pin on any point - A tap on an empty part of the map does nothing. The map always has north at the top; it does not rotate or tilt. It does not move by itself as you travel β tap the arrow button to come back to your position. Pins - A saved spot is a pin with the icon and colour you chose for it. - A catch is a pin with a fish. A catch that belongs to a saved spot has no pin of its own: the spot's pin shows the number of catches there. - Where pins would overlap they shrink to small dots, and grow back as you zoom in. Nothing is hidden: a dot opens the same way as a pin. - While a spot or a catch is open, its pin is red. Map type Tap the layers button, then choose Standard, Satellite or Hybrid. The map changes at once and the app remembers your choice. Under Layers in the same sheet you can turn Weather warnings on or off: Official weather warnings Your position The blue dot is you. If you do not see it, the app has no access to your location: Location does not work Tap the arrow button to centre the map on your position. Without a connection The background map needs a connection. Offline, the app shows "Map details need a connection. Your saved spots and GPS still work." β your pins and your position are still drawn, and you can still save spots and log catches. More: Use the app without a signal
Search for a place or a saved spot
This guide shows you how to find a lake, a bay, a town or one of your own spots on the map. Steps 1. On the Map tab, tap the magnifying glass in the top left corner. 2. Type in the field Search locations or spots. 3. Tap a result. What opens: - one of your spots β the map moves there and the spot opens; - a place β the map moves there and drops a pin on it. From the pin you can open the Forecast, save a New spot or Log a catch: Drop a pin on any point To leave the search without choosing, tap β next to the field. What you see before typing - Recent β the places you opened last. Tap the heading to see all of them. - Nearby spots β your saved spots, the nearest first when the app knows your position. Good to know - Your own spots match from the first letter and are listed first, with the line "Your saved spot". Places appear once you have typed two letters. - The search looks first around the part of the map you were viewing. - Recent places are kept on your phone only. - The search finds places and your own spots. It does not search your catches: Find your catches and spots If it does not work | The app says | What it means | |---|---| | No locations or spots found. | Nothing matches. Try a shorter or different name. | | Location search is unavailable. Your saved spots still work offline. | Searching for places needs a connection. Tap Try again. | The connection is slow. Tap Try again. |
Save a fishing spot
A spot is a place you want to come back to. It gets a pin on your map, its own forecast and a list of the catches you logged there. Your spots are private: other users do not see them. Save a spot where you are 1. On the Map tab, tap + in the bottom right corner. 2. Tap Add spot. The app finds your position and puts a red pin there. 3. If the pin is not exactly right, drag the map under it. Then tap Use this location. 4. Type a name in Spot name. A name is required. 5. Optional: tap the round icon button in the name field to choose an icon and a colour, and write notes (up to 600 characters). 6. Tap β in the top right corner. The spot is saved and opens on the map. Save a spot at any other point 1. Touch and hold the point on the map. A red pin drops there. 2. Tap New spot. 3. Enter the name and tap β. You can also search for a place first and save it the same way: Search for a place or a saved spot Adjust the place before saving In the New spot sheet, tap the Location row. Drag the map so the pin is where you want it and tap Use this location. After a spot is saved its place cannot be moved: Open, edit or delete a spot The icon The icon is a shape and a colour. You see it on the spot's pin, in search results and in your Profile. If you do not choose one, the spot gets a fishing hook on blue. You can change it later. Good to know - β is grey until the spot has a name. - If you close the sheet after typing something, the app asks "Discard this location?" β choose Keep editing to go on. - If the app cannot find your position, it says "Current location unavailable - starting from the map centre": drag the map to the right place yourself. - Saving a spot works without a connection. It is synchronised when the phone is online again. - A catch you log within about 50 metres of a spot is attached to that spot automatically. If it does not work "Couldn't save this location. Try again." β tap β once more. If it keeps happening, contact support.
Open, edit or delete a spot
Open a spot Any of these opens a spot: - tap its pin on the Map; - find it in the map search; - Profile β Spots, then tap the spot. The spot opens as a sheet over the map. Drag it up to see everything. What a spot shows - its icon, its name and how far away it is; - two buttons: Forecast and Log a catch; - official weather warnings for the place, when there are any (United States only); - Best fishing window β the next fishing windows there, today and tomorrow; - your note; - Location β the name of the water or the place, or its coordinates; - Your catches β the catches you logged at this spot. Tap one to open it. Forecast opens the full forecast for the spot. The arrow in the top left corner of the forecast brings you back to the spot. Log a catch opens the catch form with this spot as the place. Rename a spot, change its notes or icon 1. Open the spot. 2. Tap β―, then Edit. 3. Change the name, the notes or the icon. 4. Tap β. β is grey until something has changed. To leave without saving, tap β and choose Discard. Move a spot A saved spot cannot be moved. To correct the place, save a new spot at the right point and delete the old one. The catches of the old spot stay in your log, but they are not attached to the new spot. Delete a spot 1. Open the spot. 2. Tap β―, then Delete. 3. Confirm with Delete. Or: Profile β Spots, touch and hold the spot (or tap its β―), then Delete. The catches you logged at the spot are not deleted: they stay in your log and get their own pins on the map. Deleting a spot cannot be undone. If it does not work | The app says | What it means | |---|---| | No data / Best fishing window is unavailable here yet | The forecast for this place has not been loaded. It needs a connection. | | No strong window | No good fishing window today or tomorrow at this spot. | | Couldn't update this spot. Try again. | The change was not saved. Tap β again. | | Couldn't delete spot | The spot is still on your phone. Try again. | Editing and deleting spots work without a connection and are synchronised later.
Drop a pin on any point
A dropped pin lets you look at any point of the map without saving anything. Steps 1. On the Map tab, touch and hold the point you are interested in. 2. A red pin drops there and a sheet opens with the name of the place and how far away it is. 3. Choose what to do: - Forecast β the fishing forecast for exactly that point; - New spot β save the point as one of your spots: Save a fishing spot - Log a catch β log a catch with that point as its place: Log a catch To move the pin, touch and hold another point. To remove it, tap β or swipe the sheet down. Nothing is saved unless you choose New spot or Log a catch. The same sheet opens when you pick a place in the map search. The name of the place The sheet shows the name of the water at the pin β for example a bay or a lake, with the larger water or the region on the line below. Where the app has no name for the water, it shows the name of the place from Apple Maps. "Dropped pin" instead of a name means the name could not be looked up β usually because the phone is offline. Information about the water For some waters the sheet also shows Information (a short description) and Facts β area, maximum depth, elevation or length, where they are known. The units follow Distance in Units. Named waters are available for New Zealand, Australia and the United States (not Alaska or Hawaii). Not every water has a description. Information and Facts come with an update of the app. If a water shows only its name, update Fishing App in the App Store. Weather warnings In the United States, official weather warnings that cover the point are shown in the sheet, each with a Details link: Official weather warnings
